The 25-minute rule is not a law

The Pomodoro Technique suggests 25-minute study blocks, but that is a starting point, not a fixed rule. Every student's brain is different. Some find their sweet spot at 15 minutes when starting out, while students working through complex Maths or Theory may need 45 to 60 minutes of uninterrupted deep work.

The science is simple: any focused, distraction-free block — 10 minutes or 90 — beats hours of unfocused reading. Use the timer as your tool, not your boss.

The science behind it

Why focused sprints work for BECE & WASSCE

The human brain cannot maintain peak focus indefinitely. After a period of intense concentration, cognitive performance drops sharply — which is why cramming for four hours is less effective than three focused 45-minute sessions with proper breaks.

For BECE and WASSCE specifically, timed study sprints also build exam stamina. If you have never practised concentrating for 60 to 90 minutes straight, sitting in an exam hall for 2.5 hours will feel overwhelming.

Pair your sprints with these techniques

Active recall

After each sprint, close your notes and write down everything you remember. This testing effect builds stronger neural pathways than re-reading ever will.

Spaced repetition

Don't cram. Review on Day 1, Day 3, Day 10, Day 30. This fights the forgetting curve and turns knowledge into long-term memory.

The Feynman method

After each topic, explain it out loud as if you're teaching a JHS 1 student. If you can't simplify it, you haven't mastered it yet.

Set up your space

Natural lighting
Study near a window. Sunlight boosts alertness and keeps you awake.
Phone in another room
A visible phone — even switched off — reduces cognitive capacity by around 20%.
Sleep after studying
